Why should I register my TERRAPIN X?

Registration offers you many benefits. Among other things, it allows you to use the full functionality of the mobile app. The app makes it possible for you to perform remote measurements or to engage the range gate function (short-range blocking feature). Also the app enables you to measure the distance between two objects.

Registering your TERRAPIN X in the mobile app is also the only way to obtain an extended warranty that remains valid beyond the period stipulated by the standard statutory warranty (the duration of the warranty depends on the laws of the country in which the TERRAPIN X is purchased).

How do I register my TERRAPIN X?

Whenever you connect your TERRAPIN X to the APP, the latter will ask you if you wish to register your device. Agree to register the device and then follow the instructions displayed in order to complete the registration process.

Which battery model is used in the TERRAPIN X?

The TERRAPIN X uses one CR123A battery (lithium-ion, 3V).

Can I use rechargeable batteries with the TERRAPIN X?

We generally recommend the use of CR123A batteries (lithium-ion, 3V).

What's included with the TERRAPIN X?

The scope of delivery contains: the TERRAPIN X rangefinder, a neck strap, a carrying bag (dump bag), a CR123A battery, a cleaning cloth, a coin key for the battery compartment, complete instructions, and a quick start guide.

How do I clean my TERRAPIN X?

The device requires no special care. Please make sure to clean the objective and eyepiece lens with a damp cloth. Then wipe them off with a soft, clean dust-free microfiber cloth.

Is the TERRAPIN X waterproof?

The TERRAPIN X is IP 67 certified and therefore guarantees protection in water up to a depth of 1 meter (or 3.3 feet) for up to 30 minutes.

What laser class does my TERRAPIN X have and what does this class mean?

The TERRAPIN X has a Class 1 laser, which means it’s safe for the eyes under reasonably foreseeable operating conditions. For example, the laser power of most laser pointers is significantly higher than that of a laser rangefinder with a Class 1 laser.

The display on my TERRAPIN X shows four horizontal dashes. What does that mean?

Your TERRAPIN X display shows four dashes (“—-“) in order to indicate that it was unable to measure a distance. This can happen, for example, if the object to be measured is outside the maximum measuring range of your TERRAPIN X or if you attempt to take a measurement through a window pane. Your TERRAPIN X display will also show four dashes if you store a setting in the Bluetooth menu by pressing the push button three times (e.g “APP”).

To which KESTREL models can I connect my TERRAPIN X?

Via Bluetooth you can connect your TERRAPIN X to any KESTREL ballistics weather meter equipped with KESTREL LiNK. This means that your TERRAPIN connects to the following models, Kestrel 5700 with LiNK, Kestrel 5700 Elite with LiNK, Kestrel 5700X with LiNK, Kestrel 5700 with Hornady 4DOF with LiNK and the Kestrel Sportsman with LiNK.

What are the benefits of linking my TERRAPIN X to a KESTREL model equipped with KESTREL LiNK?

After a connection is established, your TERRAPIN X sends measurement results to any KESTREL model equipped with KESTREL LiNK. The Applied Ballistics Elite or Hornady 4DOF software embedded in Kestrel models equipped with the LiNK protocol calculates and displays in a matter of seconds precise ballistic corrections for the shooting distance measured with your TERRAPIN X.

What type of measurement data does my TERRAPIN X transmit via Bluetooth to a KESTREL model equipped with LiNK?

Your TERRAPIN X transmits the measured distance, azimuth, and inclination angle to a KESTREL model equipped with LiNK and connected via Bluetooth.

How do I connect my TERRAPIN X to a KESTREL model equipped with LiNK?

Turn on your TERRAPIN X by pressing (and releasing) the push button one time. The electronic reticle will appear in the display. Now press the TERRAPIN X push button three times quickly to get to the Bluetooth settings. The TERRAPIN X display now shows the current Bluetooth setting (e.g. “OFF”). Press the push button again until the display shows  “hESt.” Pressing the push button three times quickly will then store the “hESt” setting (Display “—-“). To connect your TERRAPIN X to a KESTREL model, turn on your TERRAPIN X (if it has shut down in the interim) by pressing the push button once. Along with the reticle, the display will now also show a blinking Bluetooth symbol. On your KESTREL, open the “Options” menu, select “Bluetooth,” and switch the setting to “On” Then set  “Conct” to “Device.”  Now scroll to “Name” and select “New.” After a brief delay, a list of available devices in the area will be shown. Select your TERRAPIN X and then exit the KESTREL’s Bluetooth menu. The KESTREL should now display the word “Connected.” Please note that it may take approximately 15 seconds for a connection to be established between your TERRAPIN X and a KESTREL device. Please also note that you can only connect your TERRAPIN X to either a KESTREL device or the app. In other words, the establishment of a simultaneous connection between your TERRAPIN X and the app and a KESTREL device is not possible due to technical reasons.

 

Please make sure that your Kestrel device and your TERRAPIN X always have the latest firmware installed. Regarding the TERRAPIN X, especially firmware versions 13.02 and later have resulted in a significantly improved connection stability to compatible Kestrel devices.

What additional features does the TERRAPIN X mobile app offer?

The TERRAPIN X mobile app offers you numerous additional features. For example, the app functions as an additional external display for your TERRAPIN X, which is extremely useful when your TERRAPIN X is tripod mounted. The app offers other additional features such as remote measurements, two-point measurements or the range gate function. You can also use the app to adjust basic settings of your TERRAPIN X.

Once the TERRAPIN X has been successfully connected to the app or a KESTREL weather meter with LiNK protocol, the Bluetooth symbol will stop blinking and instead be continuously lit.

For which operating systems is the TERRAPIN X mobile app available, and where can I download the app?

The TERRAPIN X mobile app can be used with Android smartphones and smartphones that work with the iOS operating system (Apple iPhone). The app can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store (Android) or the Apple App Store (iOS).

To which GARMIN devices can I connect my TERRAPIN X to?

Via Bluetooth you can connect your TERRAPIN X to the GARMIN Foretrex® 701 Ballistic Edition and the GARMIN tactix® Delta – Solar Edition with Ballistics. Both of these models are equipped with Applied Ballistics Elite. In a matter of seconds this sophisticated ballistic solver calculates precise corrections for the shooting distance measured with your TERRAPIN X. Prerequisite: Please make sure that your compatible GARMIN device is running the latest firmware version before.

What type of data does my TERRAPIN X submit via Bluetooth to compatible GARMIN devices?

Via Bluetooth you can connect your TERRAPIN X to three third party ballistic apps. They are: TRASOL, STRELOK Pro and the HORNADY 4DOF app.

What type of data does my TERRAPIN X submit via Bluetooth to TRASOL, STRELOK Pro and the HORNADY 4DOF ballistic app?

Your TERRAPIN X transmits the measured distance, azimuth and inclination angle to TRASOL, STRELOK Pro and the HORNADY 4DOF ballistic app. This data is then used by these apps to calculate precise ballistic corrections.

What do the Bluetooth modes “APP”, “heSt”, “tdH” and “OFF” of the TERRAPIN X stand for?

By pushing the measurement button three times in short succession you enter the Bluetooth menu of your TERRAPIN X.

With single pushes of the button you can toggle through the Bluetooth menu to select the desired mode. With three pushes of the button in short succession you select the desired Bluetooth mode:

  • select “APP” to connect to the dedicated TERRAPIN X smartphone app
  • select “heSt” to connect to compatible KESTREL weather meters
  • select “tdH” (Target Data Handover) to connect to compatible ballistics apps and GARMIN devices
  • select “OFF” to turn off the Bluetooth mode of your TERRAPIN X (this extends battery life)

What are the guarantee and warranty conditions for my TERRAPIN X?

The terms and conditions depend on the applicable regulations in the country where you purchased your TERRAPIN X. In general, however, registering your TERRAPIN X allows you to automatically obtain an extended warranty that remains valid beyond the period stipulated by the standard statutory warranty. The duration of the extended warranty depends on the applicable regulations in the country where you purchased your TERRAPIN X.

Who should I contact if my TERRAPIN X becomes defective or damaged?

You should contact the dealer where you purchased your TERRAPIN X. The dealer will get in touch with the TERRAPIN X distributor in your country, who will then implement the necessary service steps.
